Jon Shaban
Having gigged extensively locally and internationally as part of various bands, 2012 saw Jon Shaban launch his solo career. Armed with just his voice and his guitar, he takes to the stage to deliver songs which have been described as honest and easy to relate to. The performance is raw and there is no holding back on the sharing of extremely personal experiences. The kind we’ve all been through but haven’t necessarily processed in the way Jon does.
Since 2012, Jon has achieved a lot in South Africa having performed at most of the country’s top festivals as either himself or with his band, The Shabeen. He has graced the stage at Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen, White Mountain Folk Festival and Mieliepop, where they were reviewed as one of the top bands of the festival. Jon has also toured with and opened for various international artists such as Frank Turner, Stelth Ulvang (The Lumineers) and Brett Newski.
In 2015, Jon launched his first solo album aptly entitled ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’ in conjunction with quitting his job and committing to music full time. After rigorously touring around South Africa, Jon is now embarking on his first stint of international touring in the UK and Europe. 2016 has also seen the launch of The Shabeen’s first full-length album ‘Folk is Dead’. Having launched the album in February 2016, the band hit the road immediately and toured it for a month around the country playing 21 shows nation-wide and appearing at festivals in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga.
