Folking Around is an independent acoustic showcase night held at Woody’s Bar, Kingston, on the first Wednesday of every month. From hushed and delicate singer-songwriters to rowdy and rambunctious bands, Folking Around is dedicated to presenting high quality, contemporary folk and acoustic music from the local scene, London and beyond.

Established five years ago, in the Spring of 2013, the night has grown to receive a dedicated following based on our commitment to bringing exceptional musicians, from grassroots acts to some of the finest emerging talent on the scene, to our intimate riverside venue in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames.

Folking Around was formed in the spring of 2013 by two local musicians; JACOB DALEY, a music tutor and freelance designer; and RICKY O’DONNELL, a guitar teacher and regular performing musician with his band Eddy Smith and The 507.

However Folking Around is about more than the sum of its parts. We consider it a musician lead collective; every person who has ever performed, photographed, recorded or attended is an integral part of what makes Folking Around. We are a non-for-profit organisation but we continue to grow and develop with your support.

Our aim is simple; encourage and promote live folk music.

Horatio James “An excellent place to play and be heard, it’s a well-run and well attended night and, for one that’s free to attend, the quality of acts is unmatched in London. A far-cry from the commercially driven, burdensome, pay-to-play gigs promoters crowbar bands into… Folking Around is all about the music, and having played there twice and seen money and time invested in improving the night and the sound system, you can see there’s a dedication there that will go a long way to helping it become better still”

Tales From The Hills “Folking Around is one of those rare things in and around London, a music night that is all about the music. The audience is attentive, your fellow artists are supportive and the hosts; passionate about promoting new music. If you are looking for somewhere that puts song writing front and centre, this is the night for you”

The Swamp Stomp String Band “Beards, banjos and booze. What could be better?”

Alex Lozano “Playing this place by the river, where across the water there’s great silhouetted trees and inside a warm glow and music shared was a real treat

Charlie Thomas “The atmosphere and general vibe of the night was really fitting and helped create a fun experience for both the performer and the audience… [Folking Around] is leading a new torch in building and integrating a frequent and fun music scene in Kingston to inspire new bands

Florence Glen “Folking Around is one of those music nights that makes you remember all the things you love about music. The line up of artists was great and varied in style, and the atmosphere very welcoming and warm. It’s on my list of places to play at again!”

Hubert Murray, The Hot Rock Pilgrims Such a nice night. Lovely people and music in a chilled out venue overlooking a mirrored river

Ben Hemming “One the best folk nights in London… the vibe of the night was just want you would want from a gig, people really listening to your music and getting into your performance. They only choose great acts that really complement each other…. a really great night”

Jack Joseph Band “…[They] really care about the shows they put on and put maximum effort into promoting the night and the bands they book. It makes such a difference playing a gig run by, and with genuine music lovers in mind”
